UPDATE THURSDAY: Bakkavor 'very sad' over employee killed in road crash

2.05pm: Bakkavor has today (Thursday) spoken of the company's sadness after an employee was killed in an early morning crash on Saturday.

The 31-year-old was named earlier today as Wojciech Malecki.

A Bakkavor spokesman said: “We are very sad that one of our colleagues who worked at our Spalding site lost his life in a road traffic accident on Saturday, January 9.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time and we are supporting them wherever we possibly can.”

Thursday: An inquest has been opened into the death at the weekend of a 31-year-old Polish national who lived and worked in Spalding.

Wojciech Malecki, who worked for Bakkavor Group in Spalding, died after a silver Rover he was driving left the road and hit a tree shortly after 3am on Saturday.

The fatal crash happened in Holbeach Road, where Mr Malecki was sadly pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

There were no other passengers in the car and police have informed Mr Malecki’s immediate family and other relatives about his death.

Update: Man killed in early morning road crash in Spalding

Sunday: Floral tributes and lanterns containing candles have been placed at the spot where a man of 31 lost his life yesterday.

Police have not yet officially named the Polish national who was pronounced dead at the scene of a car crash on the A151 Holbeach Road, Spalding.

Saturday morning: Police said moments ago that a man died in the early morning road crash on Holbeach Road, Spalding.

Emergency services were called out just after 3am when a silver Rover left the road and hit a tree.

The driver, a 31-year-old foreign national who was living in Spalding, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the man’s immediate family have been informed and other relatives in Poland are being notified.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Police closed a stretch of Holbeach Road, the A151, between the A16 McDonald’s roundabout and the roundabout near Baytree at Weston.

A double-decker Norfolk Green bus using a diversion route became stuck in a grass verge on Broadgate, between Weston and the B1165 at Austendyke, and had to be towed free by recovery company Cosby, from Kirton Holme, at about 9.45am.

Police are urging anyone who anyone who witnessed the fatal accident, or who saw the vehicle prior to the incident, to contact the Lincolnshire Police Collision Witness Hotline on 01522 558855.

Earlier: Emergency services were called out to a road crash on Holbeach Road, Spalding, just after 3am today (Saturday).

A fire and rescue crew from Spalding assisted the ambulance service to free at least one person from the wreckage and provided lighting at the scene.

There are no details of any injuries at this stage.

The alarm was raised at 3.11am.
