In a joint statement, council leader John Clark and chief executive Paul Medd said: “Our thoughts are with Liz’s family and friends at this very sad time, including Liz’s daughter Tanya Shepherd, who worked in Member Services until very recently.

“Liz was a dedicated officer and a friend to many, and she will be greatly missed.”

Council workers now want to give their support one of Liz’s favourite charities to honour her memory.

Sam Anthony, the authority’s head of human resources, said: “Liz was a core part of Fenland, as she worked here for nearly 21 years.

“She was a much-loved and valued friend and colleague to many of us, and she will leave a big hole in our daily lives. Our hearts go out to her family, to whom she was absolutely devoted.

“I know that we would all want to do something to honour her memory, and the family have suggested that we hold a collection for a favourite charity.

“They will let us know which one in due course.”
