Temporary traffic lights to be installed as work paused on cracking road surface on Peterborough to Whittlesey bridge

Temporary traffic lights are to be installed on at the Ralph Butcher Causeway.

Works began at the start of July (July 7) to correct structural defects on the bridge at King’s Dyke, between Peterborough and Whittlesey, and there has been a lane closure in place since this time.

Over 750 soil nails have been installed to stabilise the embankment beneath the bridge and work is ongoing to install the reinforcement in preparation for continued spray concreting in the new year.

The road markings have also been reinstated following the resurfacing works that have been carried out.

Work will, however, stop in Friday (December 19) and resume on Monday January 5.

Two-way traffic lights will be in place 24/7 during the closure period and until the sprayed concrete wall is complete.

In May 2025, contractor, Jones Bros reported further cracks that had appeared in the road surface near the centre of the carriageway.

The costs for the work are being fully met by Jones Bros. Cambridgeshire County Council will not accept ownership of the bridge until the remediation work is addressed
