The Highways Agency is advising drivers to allow extra time for their journey or plan alternative routes until Sunday 7.

Slip roads on the A1 will be closed whenever there is traffic congestion, the Highways Agency has said.

The closures, from 7am to noon and 1pm to 8pm, and until 9pm on Saturday, will affect the northbound and southbound exit slip roads leading to the B1081 Old Great North Road, north of Carpenters Lodge junction. Anyone wanting to enter or exit Stamford will be directed to the A6121 Tinwell Road slip roads. Residents of First Drift in Wothorpe have been advised to enter Stamford the same way.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “The slip road closures will only be implemented to relieve traffic flow on the A1 and will be monitored and removed as soon as traffic flows reach an acceptable level.”

A 50mph speed limit will be in place for the duration and there will be no parking in High Street and High Street St Martin’s,

The spokesman added: “The temporary mandatory speed restriction, slip road closures and diversion routes will be clearly signposted throughout the event.

“We expect traffic to be busier in the area throughout the weekend and we strongly advise road users in the area to plan ahead and allow extra journey time in case of any delays.”

All parking has been suspended along High Street and High Street St Martins as well as part of Water Lane.
