The main road through the city was once again flooded at the Wentworth Street Junction yesterday after long and heavy showers arrived in Peterborough.

One car was stuck in the flood water last night after trying to drive through it.

It is not the first time the stretch of road has been submerged this year. In February the road was closed for several days after a burst water main flooded the carriageway.

And following summer storms there was disruption as the drains could not cope with the amount of water.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said they 'were not aware' of any issues with the drains in the area, adding: "The recent heavy rain can overwhelms the drainage systems which is why flooding can happen as the drains can’t cope with sheer volume of water. The drainage systems are managed by a number of organisations from the council, private drainage and ourselves and we work very closely with all parties involved when it comes to flooding."

A Peterborough City Council spokeswoman added: "The flooding in Bourges Boulevard has been caused following an extreme amount of rainfall, which can happen to any drainage system if capacity is exceeded. We are looking at potential options to see if this issue can be alleviated in future, but in the meantime would advise motorists to take extra care."

But Mr Bristow said action needed to be taken urgently to stop the road flooding every time rain arrived in the city.

He said: "This flooding on Bourges Boulevard is no longer a freak event. It seems to happen every single time Peterborough is hit by a storm or heavy rain. I urge Anglian Water to do something to relieve pressure on this and other major major through routes in our city. It is causing disruption, distress and alarm. In extreme cases in other parts of the city, rain water is coming into people’s houses. We need a solution. "
