UPDATED: A1 shut near Stamford after car crosses central reservation and hits three other vehicles

A very serious crash between a car and three vans closed the A1 near Stamford this morning.

The road was closed southbound between the B1081 and A606 Empingham Road and severe delays and stationary traffic is reported by the AA.

One lane has reopened as of 12pm.

A car has crossed the central reservation from the Northbound side at around 6.14am, but only the southbound carriageway was closed.

There is also a spillage of diesel and damage to the crash barrier.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue said nobody was trapped in the vehicles but three casualties were being treated by East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics.

A spokesman for the fire service said a full search of area was carried out as one of the casualties had been ejected from one of the vehicles.

Two of the casualties involved have been taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Detour in operation - via the B1081 to Tickencote, and the A606.

There are long delays between Grantham and Peterborough.
