Two ambulance crews attended to treat the girls. One had back pain and the other was described as walking wounded. The collision was described as low impact.

Both were taken to Peterborough City Hospital for further treatment as a precuation.

Cathy Carlisle, headteacher at Alderman Jacobs Primary School, said: “Unfortunately, two children from the same family were involved in an accident on the way to school this morning.

“They suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precuation.”

A police spokesman added: “This morning two young girls were knocked over by a motorist in Whittlesey. Both girls are OK and were taken to hospital as a precaution only.

“The driver was left shaken following this incident but is also OK.

“Fortunately the driver was aware of their surroundings and not abusing speed limits, otherwise this could have been a very different outcome.

“Thank you too all members of the public who assisted officers and paramedics in the early stages of this incident, as always your help is appreciated.”
