Jubilant campaigners for a “No” vote declared “Independence day” after learning that 73.6 per cent of the area’s electorate chose to support an end to UK membership of the EU.

The South Holland result was announced at Springfields Events and Conference Centre, Spalding, by South Holland District Council chief executive and returning officer Anna Graves shortly after 4am on Friday.

After it was announced that South Holland had voted 36,423 to 13,074 in favour of “Brexit”, Vote Leave campaigner and Holbeach mother-of-two Angela Skeels said: “It was a brilliant result and we knew that we had a lot of support after doing a lot of canvassing in the local area.

“Such a lot of hard work has gone into this and the team of people that we had helping us showed what amazing things a few people can do.

“This is about the masses in general, the everyday people and what the country means to them.”

Across the UK, only Boston Borough Council area had a higher percentage of people voting to leave the EU, 75.6 per cent compared to 73.6 per cent in South Holland.

Craig Jackson, Vote Leave campaign co-ordinator for South Holland, said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic result and to actually receive 73.6 per cent of the vote for Brexit means we’ll be able to celebrate this day as British Independence Day.

“I think the EU, the unelected bureaucrats who are making laws that are creeping into every nook and cranny of people’s everyday lives, got to a tipping point where the people said ‘enough is enough’.

“This is the kickback and the revolution has begun in this country.”
