Local elections: Count delayed in Peterborough

Peterborough’s local elections vote count has been delayed until 1pm this afternoon.

The city council has issued a statement clarifying that the delay is to give staff who worked overnight a break.

It said: “The election count in Peterborough will now not start until 1pm.

“This is to give staff a break following verification which finished only a few hours ago.”

Yesterday’s voting was busy with queues forming at several polling stations.

The city council said last night that queues were caused by Covid restrictions.

A spokesperson said last night: “A city council spokeswoman said: “A number of changes have been made to this year’s elections to ensure they are Covid-safe, including at polling stations.

“One of the changes is to limit the number of people in the polling station at any one time and to ask voters to queue at busy times of the day.”

Voting covers the election of 23 city councillors (out of 60 seats) in the following wards: Barnack, Bretton, Central, Dogsthorpe, East, Eye, Thorney & Newborough, Fletton & Stanground, Fletton & Woodston (2 seats), Glinton & Castor, Gunthorpe, Hampton Vale, Hargate & Hempsted, North, Orton Longueville, Orton Waterville, Park, Paston & Walton, Ravensthorpe, Stanground South, Werrington, West and Wittering.

Parish council elections will also be held in the following parish wards: Bainton, Barnack, East, Goldhay East, Hampton Hargate, Hampton Vale, Helpston, North-East, Orton Longueville, Orton Waterville, Southorpe, St Martin’s Without, Thorney (by-election), Ufford and Wothorpe.

“This is to give staff a break following verification which finished only a few hours ago.”
