Local Elections 2026: Registration deadline looms for proxy voters

Peterborough residents who are intending to get someone else to cast their vote for them at the upcoming local elections are being urged to get their applications in quickly.

The deadline for applying to vote by proxy at the May 7 election is fast approaching, with 5pm on Tuesday April 28 being the cut-off point.

Voting by proxy is a convenient way of voting for anyone who is unable to get to the polling station. By proxy simply means individuals can appoint someone they trust to vote on their behalf (either at the polling station or by post).

Residents can apply to vote in this way by completing the proxy vote application form on the Electoral Commission website and then returning it to the Electoral Services Department of Peterborough City Council.

Those applying for a proxy vote MUST ensure that their details are already on the electoral register. In addition, all applicants will need to provide a reason as to why they require a proxy vote. Some applicants may also need to get someone to support their application to confirm that their reason for applying to vote by proxy is valid.

In certain circumstances, people who did not intend to cast their ballot by proxy can apply for an emergency proxy that is available – in very certain circumstances – AFTER the standard proxy application deadline passes on April 28.

However, this urgent contingency is only available to those who have to be away from home for work purposes (and only discover this after the standard proxy application deadline has passed), and by those who develop a medical reason after the April 28 cut-off.

Anyone applying for an emergency proxy vote will need to be supported by an employer or a relevant healthcare professional.

Emergency proxy applications can be made up to 5pm on polling day by filling out a PDF form on the city council’s website and then returning it to the Elections Team.
