Local Elections 2026: How Julie Stevenson started it all for the Peterborough Greens
The Peterborough Green party success story began back in 2018 when Julie Stevenson won the Orton Waterville council election and became Peterborough’s first ever Green councillor, writes Barry Warne.
Although Julie left the party a few years later and worked as an independent councillor, any differences of opinion were put to one side when it came to doing what was right for the people who lived in the ward. Julie continued to work with Green councillors ensuring that residents got the best outcome whatever the situation or issue. Many people will remember Julie's campaign to stop a road being constructed to connect Orton Wistow Way with Lynch Wood along with her unflinching hard work over the Showground development.

Cllr Julie Stevenson will be missed in Orton Waterville and the plaudits have been pouring in on social media.
We at Peterborough Green party are delighted that Julie has chosen to endorse the 2026 Green candidate Alex Bowerbanks.
Alex is standing for the party in Orton Waterville. He has lived in the ward all his life, and attended Bushfield Academy school “I have been doing a lot of work with our existing Green Cllr Nicola Day over the past year or so” said Alex. "I have been involved with The Showground development through a local residents’ group, Showground Plans Under Residents Review (SPURR). The Orton Greens voiced residents' concerns over traffic, infrastructure, and community facilities issues. I am an Orton Waterville Parish Cllr and have been involved with working on planning applications as well as the Sustainable Future City Scrutiny Committee at Peterborough City Council If elected I plan to be a strong voice for the residents of Orton Waterville, helping to keep our local area clean, safe and tidy. The Green party has been proud to serve Orton Waterville since 2018, and look forward to doing so for many years to come.”
Ed Murphy is standing again in Fletton and Woodston after a narrow defeat in the by-election held there earlier this year. Ed is one of the most knowledgeable and well known politicians in Peterborough. “ I will be an effective representative and I have considerable knowledge of local government, and the communities in Sugar Way, Woodston and Thorpe Meadows.” said Ed
“I have worked for many years in public service, dealing effectively with local issues and I will ensure that the council spends its resources properly and efficiently. The council should spend on its core services and must learn from its previous costly mistakes. It wasted millions on an unfinished hotel and I argued it should have spent money on tackling homelessness and improving services locally.
“I want to ensure the council tackles local parking, housing and planning issues. This means restricting the number of houses in multiple occupation and the number of vehicles allowed in neighbourhoods.
“In February I came a close second in the by-election, losing by 36 votes. It is clear I can beat Reform and the Conservatives in May . Vote Green.”
