“We are really worried that is being withdrawn for all businesses and sectors at the same time when it’s clear that some businesses and sectors need more support.

“So, we are saying focus on jobs - it’s not too late to adopt a more flexible approach.”

On the new coronavirus restrictions in the North West, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “The decision the Government has made is the right decision and we will support that.

“But the communication has been extremely poor.

“So, right decision - very poor communication. That’s got to improve. We are going to see more of these situations over the coming weeks and months.”

Mr Starmer met with local businesses, and added: “It was pleasure to meet with a successful local manufacturing business and highly-skilled workers in Peterborough today.

“The Government’s furlough scheme begins to wind down tomorrow. We think it’s a mistake to wind it down for all businesses and all sectors at the same time.

“We’re launching our Jobs, Jobs, Jobs campaign because we can’t let good businesses go under. You can’t claim to be standing up for British workers if you aren’t doing everything in your power to save jobs.”
