Former deputy leader of Peterborough City Council cleared of harassment
The former deputy leader of Peterborough City Council has been cleared of harassment at court.
Cllr Amjad Iqbal (50) of Mayors Walk, Peterborough, had been charged with one count of harassment without violence.
The charge relates to a five-day period between July 26 and July 31 in 2024.
However, at a hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court this week, that charged was dismissed.

Cllr Iqbal said: “From the outset of the allegation I knew I had done nothing wrong, however the stress of going through these proceedings has been difficult to deal with. I feel sorry for anyone who has to go through this ordeal.
"I am delighted with the outcome and wish to thank all those councillors, colleagues and friends who stood by me through this case.
“I would especially like to thank my Legal team, lead by Andy Cave at Hunt and Coombs Solicitors, who were professional and supportive throughout my whole case.”
Cllr Iqbal remains a sitting councillor for Central Ward as an independent. He left the Labour Group in August 2024 stating that “his views on ‘certain policy matters’ differ from the group.”
Cllr Iqbal retained his seat in the latest local elections in May 2024, and served as deputy leader of the council from the 2024 election until the moment he left the party.
