The Gym Group set to open new location in Peterborough in place of Budgens store

Plans have been submitted for The Gym Group to take over a unit currently occupied by a branch of Budgens.

An application has been submitted to Peterborough City Council to change the use of Unit D of the Valley Park Centre in Sugar Way, Woodston which is currently home to Budgens.

Plans state the the unit is ‘shortly to be vacated’ and is planned to be occupied instead by a 24-hour gym.

This is said to be due to a “significant decline in trading” since the opening of the Lidl store on Sugar Way in 2021.

It adds that “The Gym Group aims to increase access to daily health and fitness activities to a wider demographic to encourage and improve health and wellbeing by providing a low cost and flexible gym membership option."

The plans would create 15 full-time jobs and would be “recruited locally where possible.”

In conclusion, the application adds that: “The proposals will provide a clean, safe 24 hour facility which fits within the nature of this commercial retail and leisure location.

"The proposed use and operation will add an appropriate complementary use in this location providing a new facility to improve the health and fitness of the local community.

"Providing a high level of security throughout the operation is a principal objective of The Gym

Group. Maintaining a friendly and welcoming environment and deterring any anti-social behaviour

is a priority to both The Gym Group and to its members.”

The Gym Group already operates one location in Peterborough at Westfield Leisure Centre in Lime Kiln Close, Westwood.
