Plans for new cycle lane on Crescent Bridge in Peterborough city centre

Plans for a new cycle lane on Crescent Bridge in Peterborough city centre are moving forward.

The city council’s cabinet has established a Cycling and Walking Member Working Group to analyse proposals to create a new safe walking and cycling route on Crescent Bridge.

The group has now recommended plans for a two-way cycling lane on Crescent Bridge and Thorpe Road, running westwards from the existing off-carriageway route (approximately 40 metres west of Queensgate Roundabout) to the signalised crossing immediately west of Thorpe Lea Road.

The cycle lane would replace the existing left-hand eastbound traffic lane between the off-carriageway route and Loverose Way and would have priority across Loverose Way and Midland Road.’

The group has also said that the new cycle lane should be the ‘priority route for future funding’ as it will be required to connect the future Thorpe Road scheme into the city centre.

It would not be the first time a cycle lane has been used on Crescent Bridge. During the COVID pandemic, a pop-up cycle lane was installed near the Queensgate Roundabout.

Plans for the new cycle lane will be presented to the city council’s Extraordinary, Economy, Inclusive Growth and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Thursday “December 4).
