Council provides update on food waste collection rollout to all Peterborough flats
Peterborough City Council launched a scheme in September 2024 which will eventually see all flats in the city supplied with an indoor food caddy and a roll of liners.
The scheme was brought in to comply with the latest government regulations which state that all councils must collect food waste separately from residential properties.
The city council aims to offer food waste collection to all flats in the city by March 2026, a total of 15,000.
As of November 2025, the authority said it had rolled out the service to around 30 per cent of flats so far, equating to around 4,500. This was up from 1,200 flats in March this year.

Councillor Angus Ellis, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "We have currently installed a food waste collection service in about 30 per cent of the sites and regular collections are now taking place in those areas.
"We’re working closely with management companies to keep the momentum going.
"Last week, we took delivery of 50 food waste housing units, 11 units will be installed this week, serving approximately 500 properties. Progress is moving along at pace now, and we expect this trend to continue."
The city council would need to roll out the service to around 10,500 more sites over the next four months in order to meet its target.
Those who have not yet received the service were asked to continue to put food waste into the general waste communal bin.
