Approval sought for development of proposed £36m swimming pool in Peterborough
The building of a new swimming pool and fitness centre in Peterborough could soon become a realistic proposition.
Approval for a pre-build contract for the new £36m pool and sports facility will be discussed by Peterborough City Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, January 20.
The new venue – which it is hoped will open in 2028 – will be the only public indoor swimming pool in Peterborough.
Along with a 20 metre four-lane learner pool (with moveable floor), the proposed facility will feature poolside and balcony seating, a café, softplay, health and wellbeing suite, community room and health rooms. A fitness suite with 150 stations and studios would also be included.

If approved, the project will enter the next stages of pre-construction development by awarding a contract to Alliance Leisure Services Limited (ALS).
The report that will be discussed by the cabinet at the council’s Sand Martin House offices on Tuesday states these pre-construction phases will take place from February 2026 until approximately December 2026, and cost £1.8m.
The report also says that, along with providing sport and leisure opportunities for local residents, the new facility will “create jobs [and] develop new skills.”
Speaking previously about the project, Peterborough City Council leader Shabina Qayyum said: “A new swimming pool will benefit residents of all ages and generations to come, supporting our younger residents to learn how to swim and will promote health and wellbeing for residents of all ages.”
The structure will replace the city’s 1970s-era Regional Pool and Fitness Centre on Bishops Road, which was demolished in 2024 due to structural issues.
A recent Sport England report identified a lack of swimming provision both in Peterborough and neighbouring local authority areas.
