The car then crashed near to Parliament and then one man, armed with a knife, continued the attack and tried to enter Parliament.

A police officer protecting Parliament was stabbed. He, along with his attacker, who was shot by police, have now died along with two others.

Peterborough Cathedral held evening prayer last night.

It posted on Facebook: “May we replace hatred with hope, fear with faith and let love be the hand we extend to friends and strangers of all faiths and none.”

Abdul M Choudhuri, chairman of Peterborough’s Faizan e Madina Mosque, said: “We would like to condemn most strongly the barbaric attack on the innocent people in Westminster London yesterday afternoon.

“Our thoughts and prayer are for the families of all the victims of this deplorable act of this twisted minded person who received what he deserved - a death sentence.

“We will be saying special prayers in our mosque for all those who lost their lives and those who are injured.

“The message should go loud and clear to all the terrorists and their masters who brainwashed them wherever they are, that they will never win, and the sooner they adopt a straight path the better it will be for mankind.

“We should never let them destroy the peace and harmony of this beautiful country Great Britain.”

The Masjid Khadijah & Islamic Centre in Peterborough said it is “shocked and saddened by the incident that has taken place in Westminster.

“We condemn the attacks and await the full details of why and what happened to emerge, rather than speculate.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all those affected by this terrible incident. The swift actions by the police and emergency services is both reassuring and commendable.

“We must continue to stand strong and in unity in the face of these attacks. Only together, as a cohesive society, can we combat and overcome those who wish to spread fear and discord in our society.”

Cambridgeshire Constabulary Chief Constable Alec Wood said: “On behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary I want to offer our condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in the tragic events in London.

“Our thoughts go out to colleagues in the Metropolitan Police Service, the victims and all those people affected by these attacks.

“While there is no specific intelligence suggesting an imminent threat to Cambridgeshire we will continue to monitor the situation and take the usual sensible measures to protect the public.”
