World Cup is an excellent opportunity for men in Peterborough to talk about more than football
With the FIFA World Cup in North America all but underway, much of Peterborough’s population will invariably be talking about nothing but football, football, football over the weeks ahead.
There’s no doubt that ‘footy chat’ is, for many men, the universal lingua franca: something guys of all ages, races and backgrounds can partake in without even thinking about.
And it is for precisely this reason that footy chat is now being used as a way to open up conversations that go beyond the game.
For many men, conversations about health don’t come easily. Whether it’s physical health, mental wellbeing, or asking for help, there is often a sense that guys should just ‘get on with it.’

High-profile campaigns launched in recent years, such as the FA-led Heads Up, and Heads Together, have aimed to make talking about mental health as normal as talking about football, using the common language and shared love of The Beautiful Game to encourage men to speak up and look out for each other.
Along with these trailblazing national campaigns, there are also local support initiatives that can provide invaluable support to guys experiencing difficult days closer to home.
Local support available for men's health in Peterborough
For its relatively modest size, Peterborough is fortunate that it has a number of places across the city where men who may feel they are ‘struggling with life’ can get together, connect, talk, and support one another in ways that feel accessible and informal.
One of the most well-known is Andy’s Man Club Peterborough, which runs regular sessions offering chances for men to talk openly, without pressure or expectation. In fact, the club is reaching so many guys now that they are currently scouting for a suitable second venue to complement their existing base in Werrington.
In a similar vein, For Men to Talk offers peer support through conversation and walking groups to help reduce isolation and create connection in everyday settings.
As an organisation that provides dedicated support recognising the unique pressures faced in farming and agricultural work, YANA (You Are Not Alone) is a good bet for men living in the city's rural outskirts.
While mental health issues are often associated with guys reaching middle or older age, it’s no secret that becoming a parent can be a hugely stressful time, too, bringing pressure, uncertainty, and emotional strain amid the photo moments and bouts of existential joy. Any new dads who find themselves struggling to process this monumental transition can turn to Support for new dads, which is made available locally through Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and South Lincolnshire Mind.
While all too often dismissed, it’s an uncomfortable truth that some men may find themselves in difficult or unsafe situations within the home. Support is available locally for those affected by domestic abuse.
In addition to all of the above local options there are The Samaritans who can be reached, for free, day or night, 365 days a year on 116 123. Those who prefer to speak in person can visit samaritans.org to find their nearest branch.
So, as football brings people together this summer, bear in mind that it can also create an opportunity for people to check in with those around them, using everyday conversations to help break down stigma and reach men who may not otherwise seek support.
Whether it’s a conversation with a friend, joining a local group, or accessing support; small steps can make a lasting difference.
Starting a conversation might not feel like much - but it could change a life.
