WATCH: Enterprising students race their own electric vehicles at Peterborough's Perkins Engines

Inventive students from across the UK headed to Peterborough engineering giant Pekins to race their own designed and built electric vehicles.

The youngsters were taking part in the third annual Perkins Greenpower Goblins Race Day.

It brought together primary school students for a day of racing and learning and marked the culmination of months of work supported by Perkins employee volunteers.

Throughout the programme, students developed engineering, teamwork and problem-solving skills while building confidence through designing the bodywork, building and testing their vehicles before taking to the track.

Following a closely contested day of racing, prizes were awarded for each of the races. Additional awards were presented to recognise outstanding achievement across a range of categories including:

Spirit of Greenpower Award: Morton CoE Primary School

Pekins Award: Winyates Primary School

Afterwards, Mark Wren, Engineering Manager at Perkins Engines Company Ltd. and lead for the Greenpower Goblin Race Day initiative said:

"Events like Greenpower give young people the opportunity to experience engineering in an accessible and engaging way.

"It's fantastic to see the creativity, teamwork and determination that the students have demonstrated throughout the programme.

"Our volunteers have worked closely with schools over recent months, helping students turn their ideas into reality and giving them a glimpse of the exciting opportunities that a career in engineering can offer.

He said: "At Perkins, we're passionate about inspiring the next generation of engineers and problem-solvers.

"Seeing these young people apply STEM skills, build confidence and take pride in their achievements makes events like this incredibly rewarding for all the volunteers involved."
