Over the course of Saturday and Sunday (July 11- 12), Thorpe Wood Rangers hosted their fourth annual Stef Barsby Memorial Tournament at Woodlands in Castor.
The tournament saw 60 teams- ranging from Under 7s up to Under 14s- take to the field in a mixture of competitive and non-competitive matches for the Under 7s and 8s.
Four girls divisions, from Under 14s to Under 9s, took place on Saturday before boys teams ranging from Under 7s to Under 14s get their chance on Sunday. The girls tournament remains one of the only tournaments dedicated to girls football in the city.
The tournament has been named after Stef Barsby, a much-loved club committee member who was instrumental in planning the first ever edition in 2022 before her sad passing due to cancer.
Stef was instrumental in the running of Thorpe Wood; supporting the hosting of all of the club's activities, taking a keen interest in player welfare and assisted with managing club finances.
Thorpe Wood remains a family affair for the Barsbys with Stef’s former husband Keith the Chairman, her daughter Jade Club Treasurer and Jade’s fiance Anton Barrett as Club Secretary. Stef’s son Lee plays for the club’s senior team and remains a key figure behind the scenes along with with fiancee Ellyn.
Jade said: “I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped to support us and for all of their hard work putting together such an incredible weekend.
"We genuinely could not do it without the support of everyone who volunteered their time on the day as well as the players, coaches and parents who turn up to make is such a memorable event.
"We appreciate every single one of you. This is one of my favourite weekends of the year! Mum would just love it too!
