Tributes to former owner of Peterborough's Solstice bar and city businessman

Tributes have been paid to a Peterborough businessman who ran one of the city’s most popular bars.

Michael Boyle owned and ran The Solstice in Northminster for many years – the hotspot was a much loved venue in the city for plenty of revellers, and has been sadly missed since it closed for the final time in 2020.

Peterborough resident Mr Boyle was also founder of M.P.B. Structures Limited, one of the largest concrete companies in the country, and a former Peterborough Evening Telegraph Large Business Awards Winner.

His commitment to his home city was shown in many ways – for example, M.P.B Structures are the main sponsors of the Bondholders Dinner at Peterborough Cathedral, taking place next month.

Michael was husband to Lena, as well as a much-loved dad to Michael, Patrick, Teresa Mary and Sean, and was also a granddad. Sadly, he passed away earlier this month.

In tribute, a spokesperson for M.P.B Structures spoke of Michael’s passion and commitment to his family and his work.

They said: “Mick was fondly known as “The Horse Boyle” because of his incredible ability to drive high production of rebar and concrete on major projects, including Hinkley Point A, Humber Bridge, Scunthorpe Steel Works, Kishorn, and many, many more.

“As his family have said, theirs was a journey grounded in hard work, opportunity and loyalty to those around them — values that Mick carried throughout his life.

“Mick believed in people, in community and in supporting grassroots sport. His support was genuine, consistent and deeply appreciated by everyone in GAA sports, rugby, football and boxing.

“Above all, Michael cared about people. He wanted the very best for his family, for everyone who worked with us and for all those connected to MPB. Most importantly, he was passionate about keeping people safe at work.”

A funeral, to celebrate Michael’s life, will take place at Oundle School Memorial Chapel, Milton Road, Oundle at 11am on Friday, May 29.

The company spokesperson said: “This will be a celebration of Michael’s life, so we encourage people to wear some colour. Black ties are discouraged, as Mick loved colour.”
