Thousands raised for good causes in memory of popular Peterborough man tragically killed in A1 collision

Thousands of pounds for charity have been raised in memory of a young dad from Peterborough who lost his life in a road collision.

Habib Ahmed was fatally injured when his car was involved in a collision with a van on the A1 near Newark at 8.30pm on September 18. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away.

The 23 year-old leaves behind a wife and young son, and a large extended family in Peterborough.

All those who knew and loved Habib have been fundraising in his name – raising in excess of £16,000 so far.

Around 2000 people from Peterborough and other parts of the UK attended his funeral at Faizan e Madina Mosque in Gladstone Street – with mourners donating £7,000 alone for the mosque.

Family and friends have also raised around £10,000 in Habib’s name – which will be donated to various global charities.

Ongoing collections are also being held to support Magpas Air Ambulance, with £250 having been raised so far, and another to fund warm dinners for the homeless community of Peterborough.

Habib’s uncle, Sajj Younis said: “He was doting father to his son, a good family man. We loved him, and he loved everyone around him. He was a well-liked character. We miss him dearly, his jokes, his random phone calls.

"He was on his way back to pick his son, when tragedy struck. His beloved parents were on holiday in Pakistan when this happened, they had travel back to the UK on emergency flights which took around 18hrs. Once they got back, funeral arrangements were made.”

Habib’s sister Abdah added: “Around 2000 people came to his funeral, I think it was the biggest ever seen in Peterborough. He was loved by so many people.”

The family is now planning to set up a foundation in Habib’s name, and will release details of this in the coming weeks.
