Thirty jobs are to be created at a Peterborough food store as it prepares to enhance its online services.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is looking to create a click and collect facility at its store in Oxney Road to meet the demand for online buying during the Covid-19 health crisis.

The new service will be based in a canopied-covered 340 square metre space in the store’s car park and which will involve a reduction of the current 73 general parking bays.

It is seeking planning approval from Peterborough City Council for the alterations and the installation of associated signage.

The store plans to add six parking bays to the 12 bays currently earmarked for taxis and also create two bays solely for click and collect service users.

Overall there will be a loss 29 parking spaces.

A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said the application was to create an extension to the store to provide an expanded goods online facility.

She said: “We continually review our store estate and operations to ensure we’re best serving our customers.

“An extra facility is needed to fulfil growing demand for home delivery and is expected to create around an additional 30 jobs.”

It is the second leading food retailer in Peterborough to announce new jobs creation at is seeks to fulfil growing customer demand for online purchasing services.

Waitrose, in Mayor’s Walk, plans to create 60 jobs with the addition of a small warehouse to meet a huge rise in grocery deliveries and collections over the past month during the coronavirus pandemic.
