The state of the High Street: How many bars, coffee shops, bookies and empty units are in Peterborough city centre

Business appears to be thriving for retailers in Peterborough city centre with barely space for new arrivals.

A snapshot by the PT of the array of retailers of all kinds and sizes found that there are less than a handful of empty shops available in the the retail heart of Peterborough.

Not only that but there appears to be good mix of retailers across the city from beauty salons and food shops to eateries and major banks.

Our shop count also underlines the findings of a spate of recent national studies that have found that Peterborough has one of the lowest shop vacancy rates in the country.

However, our findings might also be at odds with a call from them public for greater variety of retailers in Peterborough.

According to Peterborough City Council, among the 600 responses to its public consultation on a new vision for the city centre over the next two decades, many people expressed the view that there should be a greater variety of retailers in the city centre.

But judging by the current health of the city centre, there seems to be is little space for too many any extra rtetailers.

Our snapshot started at Tesco on Broadway took in Long Causeway and Bridge Street to the Bourges Boulevard crossing.

Also included are Cathedral Square, Cowgate and the area around St John’s Church.
