The arrival of a Taco Bell restaurant and takeaway in Peterborough city centre has moved a step closer.

The wheels have been in motion by the chain – known for its Mexican-inspired fast food – since the beginning of September, when planning applications concerning two vacant units at the Queensgate centre were submitted to the city council.

At the same time a recruitment drive got under way to fill a General Manager and Assistant Manager posts at the proposed eaterie.

The city council has approved three applications which cover the amalgamation of the adjoining units and change of use to mixed restaurant and hot food takeaway; internal alterations and installation of extraction system; and illuminated signage.

Access will be from the existing doors, inside Queensgate and opposite McDonald’s, and a door opening out onto Cathedral Square will be replaced.

While there is currently to timeframe for completion of the work, and the opening of the restaurant, it is expected to be able to seat around 20 diners inside, and be open for business between the hours of 10am and 11pm each day of the week.

It is thought that the proposal would create 36 jobs – 16 full-time and 20 part-time roles.

It would add to the growing food and drink attraction around the Square which also includes Tap & Tandoor, Franco Manca, Nando’s, Wildwood, Pizza Express, Cote, Las Iguanas, Five Guys, Turtle Bay and the coon-to-be completed Kathmandu Lounge.
