Post Office in Peterborough city centre to close

The Post Office in Peterborough city centre is to be permanently closed, it has been revealed.

It means the Post Office, that is based inside the TG Jones store in Bridge Street, will close early next year.

The Post Office says the move has been forced by the decision of retailer TG Jones to close its store in Bridge Street which has provided space for the Post Office the last 10 years.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "Regrettably, Peterborough Post Office is due to close in early 2027. The date is being finalised.

“The vacancy has already been advertised and we have heard from interested retailers.

"We are now looking more closely at the expressions of interest.

"We want to open a replacement branch as soon as possible, but this can take around six months.

She said: “We fully recognise the challenging trading conditions that TG Jones and many other High Street retailers are facing at the moment.

"TG Jones had its Restructuring Plan approved by the High Court on 1 July. Consequently, TG Jones is to close its Peterborough store.”

"In the interim alternative branches will be Eastfield Road, High Street, Old Fletton and Gladstone Street.”

The full addresses of alternative branches are:

  • Eastfield Road Post Office, 97 Eastfield Road, Peterborough, PE1 4AU (0.7 miles)
  • Old Fletton Post Office, 132 High Street, Old Fletton, Peterborough, PE2 8DP (0.9 miles)
  • Gladstone Street Post Office, 320 Gladstone Street, Peterborough, PE1 2BY (1 mile)

The move will spark anger from political; leaders who have stated that it is imperative that there is a Post Office service in the city centre.

There has been a question mark over the future of the city centre Post Office following the recent sale of the WH Smith to TG Jones, which just three months ago announced it was to close seven stores.

The retailer stated that Post Offices within the stores would close as well.
