Planning application for gym to replace Budgens in Peterborough resubmitted

Plans that will see a local supermarket in Woodston turned into a 24-hour gym have been resubmitted to Peterborough City Council.

This is the second time The Gym Group (TGG) has submitted plans to repurpose Budgens supermarket on Sugar Way.

TGG withdrew its initial application to the city council’s planning department on March 25.

In the current application submitted on April 23, a planning statement drawn up by Urban Space Planning on behalf of TGG states:

“This application is a resubmission of application ref: ref: 26/00070/FUL which was withdrawn to assess and meet additional information requirements set out from the Environmental Health Officer (EHO).

“This application includes additional information required, including an updated Acoustic Report to address all points raised by the Environmental Health Officer.”

As before, the plans seek to replace the Budgens unit – which has a gross internal area of 928.5 sqm – as it is to be “vacated shortly.”

TGG is an experienced and successful operator of 24-hour health and fitness outlets. It currently has more than 250 gyms operating across the country, including an existing premises at the Westfield Leisure Park in Westwood.

Documents in the application say TTG “aims to increase access to daily health and fitness activities to a wider demographic to encourage and improve health and wellbeing by providing a low cost and flexible gym membership option.

“The proposals will provide a clean, safe 24-hour facility which fits within the nature of this commercial retail and leisure location.

If successful, the establishment of a new gym outlet at Sugar Way will lead to the creation of 15 full-time jobs, with TTG recruiting “locally where possible.”
