Peterborough teacher wins prestigious 'unsung hero' certificate at national teaching awards
Ormiston Bushfield Academy in Peterborough is celebrating the achievements of teacher Claire Rowbottom after she received a Certificate of Achievement in the Unsung Hero category at the Pearson National Teaching Awards 2026.
The award, presented on National Thank a Teacher Day (17 June), recognises the significant contribution Claire makes to the academy community through her dedication, care and commitment to supporting young people.
The school has said that Claire has helped shape the student experience at Ormiston Bushfield Academy through her work across enrichment, student leadership, personal development and the arts, supporting students to develop confidence, resilience and independence.
A key figure in the academy’s Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme, Claire has created opportunities for students to challenge themselves and develop important life skills, including teamwork, perseverance and leadership.

Through her support and encouragement, she has guided many young people through the physical and mental demands of the award, helping them build confidence and achieve their goals.
Her impact also extends beyond outdoor education, as Claire’s directorial support of the academy musical has helped establish the arts as an important part of school life. Under her guidance, students from a wide range of backgrounds have developed confidence, teamwork and performance skills, while productions have also been shared with local schools, including SEND settings.
As Lead for PSHE and Citizenship, Claire has played a central role in developing and strengthening the academy’s curriculum. Her thoughtful approach has helped create a programme that supports students’ personal development, wellbeing and understanding of the world around them.
Claire also established and developed the academy’s Student Voice programme, creating opportunities for students to contribute to decision-making and shape their educational experience.
Colleagues describe Claire as someone who consistently goes above and beyond for students. Whether supporting a DofE expedition, directing a school production or helping students overcome personal challenges, she combines high expectations with genuine care and encouragement.
Claire said: “Supporting young people has always been the most rewarding part of my role, and helping them to develop confidence, realise their potential and achieve their goals is something that has driven me throughout my career. I am honoured to receive this award, and I would like to thank the team at Bushfield for putting me forward for it. I have been fortunate to work with so many dedicated colleagues and inspiring students over the years, and it is a privilege to be part of such a supportive school community.”
Dennis Kirwan, Principal at Ormiston Bushfield Academy, added: “We are delighted to see Claire recognised through the Pearson National Teaching Awards. This honour reflects the considerable impact she has on our students and wider school community. Claire’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people and supporting them to succeed has benefited countless students over the years, and this recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
