Peterborough residents pay heartfelt tributes to city icon Nobby the Tramp

Residents have paid tribute to one of Peterborough’s most iconic residents who died earlier this week.

Michael Ross - known to thousands of residents in the city as Nobby the Tramp - passed away on Tuesday aged 74 following a battle with illness.

He was a popular character in the city, and for many years lived in a bus shelter on Oundle Road. He had been living in a flat in Dogsthorpe when he died.

After The Peterborough Telegraph announced the news yesterday, hundreds of people got in touch to pay their respects to Michael.

Ian (@superposh7) said on Twitter: “Up there with Walter Cornelius as true Peterborough legends. #RIPMichael #RIPNobby”

Fennars (@fennars) added: “Sad news indeed. When I was at Longueville school Nobby was in residence at the bus stop. A true gent, he would always chat to us and would never beg or accept handouts. RIP Nobby!”

UserNameTobAnnounced (@tob_user) was one of many people who tried to help Michael when he was living on the streets. They said: “Oh no, this is incredibly sad news. I remember seeing him in the bus station near pdh as a kid. We tried to give him money but he scared us away. This is incredibly sad to hear”

Chad~CPFC (@inkyfagin) posted: “Orton Longueville School in the 80’s & Nobby was an ever present, never begged, hassled or gave anyone the slightest grief & would always speak if you took the time to chat. Genuinely pleased to see he lived the last few years off the streets & in a better place RIP Big Man”

Chris (@poshbox8) described Michael as ‘a polite fella’ and said: “#RIPNobbyTheTramp Michael was a very amiable and polite fella who just wanted a simple life Sad news indeed”

On Facebook Stella Prentice wrote: “One of Peterborough’s legends. R.I.P Michael, tho you’ll always be fondly remembered as our Nobby.”

Becky Scotcher wrote: “I remember always seeing him when walking towards Orton mere as a child and also my parents giving him little treats he could enjoy. R.I.P Nobby”

Aaron Llewellyn added: “May u finally find some peace Michael/nobby R.I.P my friend”

Funeral details for Michael have yet to be confirmed.
