Peterborough Regional Pool: Just diving board remains from pool as demolition begins on much loved site

Historic site being knocked down after RAAC was found

The old diving board remains standing – but the demolition of Peterborough Regional Pool has now begun.

Scores of Peterborough families have cherished memories of the pool, with many learning to swim – and teaching their own children – at the site.

But now the walls are being pulled down.

A ‘soft strip’ demolition of the pool began in January to prepare for the full demolition works.

The Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre was closed in September 2023 following works to remove asbestos and then the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).

The decision was made to permanently close the centre by the council's cabinet in March 2024 due to costs to repair the building not representing best value for the authority.

No plans to replace the pool have been officially confirmed – although some candidates in this week’s Mayoral elections have spoken about the importance of having a pool.

In March, the council closed the Regional Pool car park while the demolition was taking place.

They said the car park would be closed for four months to allow that to happen.

No projects for the land the pool sits on have been announced.
