Peterborough Potholes: All the stats - including how much the council has paid out to motorists, and how many potholes have been repaired
Potholes have become an epidemic on roads across the country this winter – and you don’t need us to tell you that Peterborough has not been immune to the problem.
Some drivers have likened driving on city roads to getting behind the moon buggy on the lunar surface.
It is no secret that the wet, cold and rainy winter we suffered this year has had a detrimental impact on the road network, with 787 potholes reported from January 1 to February 24 this year already compared to just 231 over the same period last year.
This week, The Peterborough Telegraph revealed the streets and roads where the most potholes have been reported in the city so far this year – with the A16 leading the way.

However, our Freedom of Information Request asking about potholes revealed other interesting facts…
Between January 1 and February 28, there were 839 reports made to the city council with a subject of ‘potholes’
The streets with the most reports are:
A16 Spalding Road
Oundle Road
Burghley Avenue
Fletton Parkway
Eastern Avenue
London Road
Eye High Street
Stanground Bypass
Mountsteven Avenue
Shrewsbury Avenue
Lawson Avenue
Bretton Way
Since March 2024, there have been 46 claims from motorists to the city council for damage to their car.
Of those, 18 were unsuccessful. One claim, which was made in February last year, was successful – however, a note from the council’s FOI team said: “One claim from February 2025 has been settled following the issue of Court proceedings. This claim was being handled by the Highways contractor Milestone and so would not normally feature in our figures, however Milestone were not willing to settle the entirety of the claim and so the claimant issued legal proceedings against PCC as the highway authority. We then had to settle the claim and recover the money from Milestone, hence it does now feature in our figures, but the net cost to Peterborough City Council is zero.”
The remaining 27 have yet to be concluded.
Peterborough City Council said that since March 2024, they have repaired 7,746 potholes across the city.
