Peterborough pensioner climbs equivalent of Mount Everest - by walking up and down his stairs!

Ron Seddon, who co-founded Netherton United Football Club, managed to complete the 8,848m challenge over 45 days.

The 72-year-old took 47,726 steps at his home in Audley Gate, averaging 76 flights of stairs a day.

And to help him keep track of his progress he chalked off other famous mountains he had ‘scaled’ on the way, before reaching the ultimate ‘peak’ on Saturday.

“I drove my wife crazy as to not lose count I had to call out loud. She wants a new stair carpet!” he said

Ron managed to do around 30 to 40 minutes a day and only missed one day during his challenge.

He admitted the first 20 flights of stairs could be “really tedious,” but that once you pass 30 “you want to keep going”.

“The inspiration for it came from my son Eddie,” he added. “He is a PE teacher at Neale-Wade Academy and because of the coronavirus impacting what his kids can do for fitness, one of the things he came up with is going up and down stairs a number of times.

“I thought ‘that’s a good idea, why don’t I try and climb Everest.’

“I do walking football at Netherton and wanted to do something to keep me fit when for when I return in the future. It was a bit odd but quite interesting!

“I was glad when I finished but it wasn’t too bad.”
