Peterborough girl grows hair for five years to donate to children suffering with hair loss

Nine-year-old Aimee Lee has been growing her hair for the past five years in order to donate it to the Little Princess Trust to help a child less fortunate than herself.

The idea came from a conversation she had with her mother, Michelle, in which they discussed how some children don’t have hair of their own or lose it because of illnesses such as cancer.

After seeing a picture of a child affected by this, Aimee decided she wanted to grow her own hair long enough to have it cut and gift it to someone else.

Aimee, who lives in Hampton Hargate, has previously had small trims but is gearing up to have her first full haircut in five years on October 10.

She will have 16 inches chopped off to donate to the Little Princess Trust.

The charity, set up in 2006, provides free, real hair wigs to children and young people, up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Aimee’s mum, Michelle, said: “We’re very proud of her. This is something really close to her heart.

“Like a lot of children, she took a pair of scissors to her hair when she was in reception.

Following that, we got into a discussion about children who do not have their own hair and I ended up showing her a picture.

“From then on, she has always said she wants to donate her hair.

“It’s really quite thick now and she’s a really active person, she loves her gymnastics, so has to wear it up a lot of the time but she has been determined to make this donation.”

As well as donating her hair, Aimee also hopes to raise £500, which is roughly the cost for the Little Princess Trust to produce one of their wigs.

She has set up her own GoFundMe page and anyone wishing to donate can click here.
