Peterborough councillors set to fight local elections after Prime Minister's U-turn
Peterborough councillors will fight local elections in May after the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer abandoned plans to postpone the spring ballot.
The Prime Minister has just announced that he has dropped proposals that would have allowed local authorities, including Peterborough City Council, to delay the May election for a year.
The city council was given the option of cancelling the local elections to allow councillors and officers to focus their attention on local government reorganisation.
The change in policy has just been announced in a letter by government leaders ahead of a legal challenge by Reform UK to the cancellation of the elections.

Members at an extraordinary meeting of Peterborough City Council’s ruling Cabinet voted last month in favour of the postponement of the May elections in Peterborough.
It was claimed postponing the elections would allow members to concentrate on finalising changes to local government, save money and stop voters tiring of the need to vote.
The Government’s U-turn means the Peterborough City Council elections will take place on May 7.
