Peterborough Cathedral to mark 25 years since devastating fire

Twenty five years after a devastating blaze hit Peterborough Cathedral, a special service will be held to remember the disaster -and the work carried out afterwards.

Arsonists struck at the historic building on the evening of 22 November 2001.

Thankfully, fire fighters were able to prevent major structural damage to the building – but there was a large amount of damage – with the bill coming to more than £1 million.

There was extensive smoke damage, and every window in the building had to be carefully cleaned – with a team of volunteers working to return the cathedral to it’s former glory.

Now, a quarter of a century on, Peterborough Cathedral will mark the event with a special talk, looking back at the story of restoration, resilience and renewal.

The event will see Ray McDonnell, Dr Jackie Hall, Paul Binski, Mark Short and Elaine Harburn share fascinating insights, expert knowledge and personal reflections on the fire and its aftermath.

From the restoration of the Cathedral’s internationally significant painted nave ceiling, to the people and projects helping preserve our heritage today, you will be able to discover the stories behind this important chapter in the Cathedral's history.

The evening will also include a panel discussion and audience Q&A, giving you the opportunity to hear different perspectives and ask your own questions.

The event will take place on Monday, November 23 from 7pm until 9pm, and will, of course, be held at Peterborough Cathedral.

Standard tickets cost £10 (not including booking fee), while Cathedral Supporter tickets cost £11 (not including booking fee.)
