Peterborough bank holiday crowds caused Ferry Meadow car parks to close to keep social distancing possible

Residents are being urged to travel to Ferry Meadows by bike or on foot after huge crowds over the bank holiday caused staff to close car parks to keep residents safe.

With the sun shining, the country park was packed with visitors over the long weekend, as government lockdown rules now say residents can exercise as often as they want.

Their were so many visitors that staff had to close the car parks five times to ensure social distancing rules could be enforced - however, once in the park, most families stuck to the distancing rules while they enjoyed the spring sunshine.

Some sunbathed to pick up a tan, others tried something more energetic, including canoeing down the river.

A spokesman for the park said: “Saturday and Sunday were manageable but Bank holiday Monday was very busy and the car park entrance had to be closed five times over the afternoon with the public turned away, as numbers were so high. We would like to remind our visitors to please continue to come to the Park on foot or by bike if you can - or avoid peak times, to be sure of a parking space.”
