Matić is the second youngest nominee ever for the prize- which boasts former winners such as Anthony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry.
They have been nominated for their solo exhibition ‘AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH’, on show at CCA Berlin. The works spans the medium of photography, film, sculpture and poetry and touches of themes such as national identity, social dynamics, race and gender.
Matić’s work is currently on display at the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford (and will be until February 22). The overall winner of the prize will be announced on Tuesday (December 9).
Matic has been joined on the finalists shortlist by Nnena Kalu, Mohammed Sami and Zadie Xa.
The Turner Prize winner will receive £25,000 with £10,000 awarded to the other shortlisted artists.
Rene’s nomination reads: “Matić captures fleeting moments of joy in daily life, and expressions of tenderness within a wider political context. Their work includes highly personal photographs of family and friends in stacked frames, paired with sound, banners, and installation. The jury were struck by the artist’s ability to express concerns around belonging and identity, conveying broader experiences of a young generation and their community through an intimate and compelling body of work.”
