The Peterborough Performing Arts College, based at, but independent of, the city’s Key Theatre on The Embankment, saw 25 talented young singers, dancers and actors – many from outside of the city – embark on their fully funded two-year Level 3 Diploma in Musical Theatre.
And despite a hectic induction week, Principal Michelle Dean couldn’t have been happier with the way things had started.
"It has been a bit full-on, fitting everything in, but they are a loveliest bunch of students we could have asked for,” she said.
“I think too that all the parents who have come along in the first few days have been blown away by the incredible teachers and staff that we have here.”
Classes cover musical theatre including all forms of dance, vocal coaching, audition techniques and more – with those leading the way having enjoyed hugely successful careers in the business:
Charlie Bruce, a former member of the National Youth Ballet who won TV's So You Think You Can Dance;
Danielle Cato, former Junior Associate of The Royal Ballet;
Identical twins Naomi and Hannah Moxon - who perform as Classical Reflection and have a Classical Brit Award nomination to their names;
Singer, dancer and choreographers Laura and Jason Gray, who have starred in numerous smash-hit West End shows.
and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire graduate Megan McQuaid.
“The best thing is that all the staff are really gentle, kind and encouraging,” enthused Michelle. “They all share the same ethos, creating a really nice working environment for the students.”
Thanks to the collaboration with the Landmark Theatres, who operate the city’s Key and New Theatre, all the students will get 30 hours work experience at one of the venues to boost their knowledge of the industry.
"It is a massive plus,” added Michelle, who also runs the PPA theatre school for younger children on Saturdays. “After completing their education some of the students might want to go into teaching, stage management, directing, etc, so they will have the opportunity to see how the industry works.”
