Man jailed after driving dangerously in desperate bid to escape police

A man who drove dangerously at almost twice the speed limit in a bid to escape police has been jailed for more than a year.

Cambridgeshire police say that Haider Ali (27) was spotted by officers in a patrol car in Coneygear Road, Huntingdon, at about 10.40pm on March 31, 2024.

A police spokesperson said: “His black Vauxhall Mokka had piqued their interest after driving in a loop and the officers began following him.

“Ali suddenly turned into Thames Road, driving over the kerb at about 50 mph in a 30mph speed limit.

“He then went off-road along an alleyway and onto Nene Road where he crashed and tried to run away but was arrested nearby.”

Ali, of Ambury Hill, Huntingdon, was jailed for one year and six months at Cambridge Crown Court on January 5, having been found guilty of dangerous driving by a jury following a trial.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years.

Afterwards, PC Chester Lewis, who investigated, said: “Ali’s driving was incredibly dangerous and could have put pedestrians and other road users at serious risk of harm.

"Thankfully, it was not a busy time.

“This case and the resulting jail sentence show how seriously this kind of driving is taken by police and the courts.”
