North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara voted to back the Prime Minister’s post-Brexit deal as the Government secured an overwhelming majority for its so-called Windsor Framework.

Mr Vara joined more than 500 other MPs from most political parties yesterday (March 22) in the House of Commons as they voted in favour of Rishi Sunak’s new Brexit protocol for Northern Ireland.

But Peterborough MP Paul Bristow was among 50 Conservative MPs who either chose not to vote or who were absent.

Afterwards, Mr Vara said: “The Windsor Framework makes significant progress on the current position under the Northern Ireland Protocol, especially with the addition of the Stormont Brake, which allows local politicians to have a veto on new proposals.

"I very much hope that attention can now turn to getting the Northern Ireland Assembly up and running again, so that local politicians can start taking important decisions which directly affect their communities.”

Mr Bristow said family matters had taken him away from the House of Commons.
