Here’s why part of Peterborough’s Long Causeway has been closed off for weeks

Pedestrians cannot currently access the section of Long Causeway at its junction with Westgate

Work to improve pedestrian safety in Peterborough is continuing this summer, with part of a key city centre street still closed.

The northern section of Long Causeway remains closed off to pedestrians while construction work continues on a city centre traffic enforcement scheme.

As part of the improvement works, a new set of retractable bollards are being installed in Long Causeway.

Under the new scheme, the northern entrance to Long Causeway will be converted into a pedestrian and cycle zone, with traffic enforcement cameras in operation.

No motorised vehicle should enter at any time, by any means and includes vehicles being driven, pushed or caused to enter by any other method.

Certain types of vehicles will be exempted from the restrictions, including emergency vehicles, goods vehicles and council vehicles.

Further bollards will also be installed to prevent vehicle access to Cathedral Square from Bridge Street and Church Street.

Councillor Angus Ellis, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The bollards will help enhance pedestrian accessibility and safety and will be accompanied by a revised traffic regulation order that continues to prevent access to non-authorised vehicles and limit delivery and goods vehicles to specific times; exemptions will be applicable to specified vehicles.

“The first site to be delivered will be Long Causeway with works currently under way.

“Unfortunately, we have encountered a small delay at the Long Causeway site due to the discovery of unusually shallow utilities.

“We have been working closely with the necessary parties and are extremely close to agreeing a solution that all stakeholders are happy with.

“During the delays we have been able to divert the workforce and commence works at the other sites included in the project to help minimise prolonged disruption in the city centre.”
