First look inside Peterborough's former Central Post Office as 10 year wait for new tenant looks poised to end

A new commercial tenant looks to have been found for Peterborough’s former Central Post Office after its closure a decade ago.

Commercial agents Eddisons say an offer to lease the property at 28 to 30 Cowgate is currently under consideration.

The identity of the potential tenant has not been revealed.

Our pictures show the vast empty interior of the property which closed as a Post Office in 2016 when the business was moved to the former WH Smith premises in Bridge Street.

If a deal to lease the Cowgate premises, which has been on the market with a rental price of £50,000 a year, is agreed it will end a 10 year for a new user to be found for the unit which occupies a prominent position in Cowgate.

A spokesperson for Eddisons said: “The former central post office premises on Cowgate are under offer currently, although commercial confidentiality does not permit us to disclose the nature of the interested party’s business ahead of any deal’s completion.

"Once a deal is completed, it will be great to see these city centre premises brought back to commercial use following the successful multi-let investment sale of the parade of properties from 14-30 Cowgate that BTG Eddisons concluded earlier this year on behalf of the previous owner.”

The property, which offers a total of 3,186 square feet of space, provides a self-contained lock up shop with ground floor and two upper floors.

The ground floor has a double frontage to Cowgate and provides largely open plan accommodation with a single toilet.

The first and second floors provide back of house staff and storage accommodation, WCs and kitchen facilities.

There is loading access to the rear of the property which is accessed through a side passage from Cowgate.

Three months ago the premises of the Central Post Office plus a range of adjoining units, together running from 14 to 30 Cowgate, were sold to an investor for an undisclosed sum.

The property had been marketed with a guide price in excess of £2.2 million.

The parade of properties had previously been under the same ownership for several decades.
