Explainer: All we know about plans to fill in two ugly subways in Peterborough with 1,000 tonnes of concrete

More than 1,000 tonnes of concrete will be used to fill in two subways as part of a major city centre enhancement project.

Called City Link, the venture is expected to transform a major pedestrian route from Peterborough train station through to the retail heart of the city centre at Cowgate.

Here is what we know so far about City Link.

Work is planned to start at the beginning of July to overhaul the Queensgate roundabout and turn it into a user-friendly route, direct and obvious route between the station and Cowgate.

The major feature of the project will be ridding the city of two ugly and graffiti covered subways.

Peterborough City Council officers say the work will involve pouring 418 cubic metres of flowable concrete into structures around the subways at the west and south ends of the Queensgate roundabout that link up Bourges Boulevard and Thorpe Road.

In addition to the flowable concrete, a further 18 cubic metres of Sika Grout will be used to top off the material.

It is estimated the flowable concrete will need about 102 standard mixer trucks to bring it to the site.

It is equivalent to more than 1,000 tonnes of concrete.

In theory, there would be enough flowable concrete used in the subways to comfortably fill Peterborough’s planned £36 million 25-metre long swimming pool.

Site fencing for trial holes will be set up at the end of May and details on the Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders for the lane closures on Queensgate roundabout will be released in June.

Once City Link has been completed all access and exit points will return back to the current position.

The only carriageway difference will be that the lanes on the eastern side of the Queensgate roundabout, which goes past the bus station and Cowgate exits, will reduce from three to two.

The works will also mean a realignment of the exit from Peterborough train station to make it more city centre facing.

The new route will be a more direct and user-friendly foot and cycle way to the city centre and at the Cowgate end, a new modern crossing will be installed to get users across the road and into Cowgate.

The route will be landscaped with 55 new trees planted and stone walling installed.

A large gateway structure is planned to be installed at the entrance to Priestgate and Peterborough museum.

Significant traffic disruption is expected during the works and the council plans to issue details of closures and diversions in the next few weeks.

The works will be partly paid for with a £1.5 million government grant through the Peterborough towns fund .

City Link is part of the £65 million station quarter regeneration and once the roundabout transformation is completed, work will begin on this long awaited venture.
