The origins of the traditional English breakfast can be traced back to the 14th century and it’s safe to assume that most of us have tucked into one at some point in our lives.
In its original form the full English would have included a few things that you wouldn’t typically find in a greasy spoon these days.
Broiled kidneys, sheep’s tongues and pheasant legs are just some of the culinary delights that hungry men and women of the era would have enjoyed.

These days the full English is enjoyed every day in towns and cities across the country and has grown to become one of the country’s best-loved meals.
Peterborough, of course, is no different.
Many of us love nothing better than treating ourselves to a plate full of fried goodness, including sausages, hash browns, bacon and eggy bread.
The humble full English breakfast is arguably best enjoyed on chilly autumn or winter mornings.
Earlier this week we asked readers to nominate what, in their opinion, is the best place in Peterborough for a good ol’ grease-up this autumn.
Having received well over 300 suggestions, it’s fair to say that Peterborians have some strong opinions on the subject!
We’ve taken a look at eight of the most popular suggestions below.

1. Jinja-Express - 52 High Street, Fletton
4.8/5 Google rating. A recent customer said: "The best full English I’ve had in years. The waitress was attentive even when really busy. The food was grade A greasy spoon, just like a breakfast should be. The chef serenaded us to reggae classics. What more could you ask for? Oh, and the tea and coffee (free with your breakfast) tasted lovely. Well done guys and girls." Photo: Altir Ricardelli/Google

3. Nostra - Yaxley Broadway Shopping Centre
4.6/5 Google rating. A recent customer said: "Best cafe in the village, in my opinion! Food was amazing! Smoothie was ace! Went for breakfast and was not disappointed. Staff were lovely." Photo: Nostra

4. Mancetter Square Cafe - Mancetter Square, PE4 6BX
4.6/5 Google rating. A recent customer said: "Been here twice now for a full English; it’s a traditional British cafe. The food is fresh and cooked to order and I’d recommend the large breakfast but swap that toast for a fried slice! I’d describe it as a “greasy spoon” in all the best ways. The food is not greasy it is well cooked and presented." Photo: Google
