Delight as Flag Fen Roundhouse rises from the ashes a year after devastating arson attack

A year after arsonists burnt a roundhouse to the ground at Peterborough’s Flag Fen Archaeology Park a new reconstruction has been created.

Many people in the city were devastated by the arson attack in June 2025, which saw two roundhouses destroyed.

The flames could be seen for miles around, with crews rushing to tackle the blaze.

The Iron Age roundhouse was constructed in 2022. It was based on an actual Iron Age roundhouse that was discovered at Cats Water, next to Flag Fen and replicates how our ancestors lived around 2500 years ago - and has been a popular educational site for school and family visits.

Following the destruction, volunteers rallied to re-build the roundhouses – and now, one of them has been completed, and has been welcoming new visitors at the park.

Arthur Randall, ranger at Flag Fen said the way the community came together to help was heartwarming.

He said: “It was devastating to see all the hard work from the old one just go to waste, but everyone pulled together and came out and helped build this. We also had people learning new skills, working together as a team - we really appreciate it.

"We had a lot of support in terms of money and time - we appreciate both but it is nice seeing people out here really getting to grips with experimental archaeology."

The roundhouse itself was built using similar techniques to those used thousands of years ago.

Arthur said: “It is a multi purpose building, most people had them as their home, and you have a family of people living and working out of here. You would use it as your home base while you went out into the fields tending your crops and your livestock.

"There are multiple sites in this part of the country where we have found roundhouses, generally you find about 5-8 in the same space, making a small village."

Cambridgeshire Police said two teenage boys, and one man in his 20s, all from Peterborough, were arrested on suspicion of arson, in October 2025.

However, charges were not authorised and they were released with no further action.
