But workers at Werrington Pharmarcy in Church Street have been given some extra protection after a large screen was installed at the front desk.

And the idea has proved so popular that the nearby opticians has followed suit.

Pharmacy manager Mohammed Yasin said: “It reduces transmission of droplets, although it can never be 100 per cent effective.

“It’s something I thought we would put in to help our staff and give them a bit of peace of mind. They like it and the customers like it. It might help someone.

“It’s very busy at the moment with everyone after paracetamol. thermometers and gloves. I can’t keep up with demand.

“The prescription stocks are fairly good but most of the country are struggling to get paracetamol.”

The screens were installed by Business Interiors of Peterborough.

A screen has also been installed at the opticians
