A member of staff at the sorting office in Werrington informed the Peterborough Telegraph that a large number of posties departed after being informed of the positive test this morning (Saturday).

It is at least the second time that a Royal Mail worker in Peterborough has been confirmed to have the virus.

On a previous occasion in April Royal Mail insisted that precautions have been taken and it re-iterated that stance again today.

A spokesperson said: “A colleague who works in one of our Peterborough sites has been diagnosed with the Covid-19 coronavirus. We wish them a speedy recovery as they remain at home under clinical advice.

“Royal Mail’s number one priority is keeping our people and our customers safe. We are doing everything we can to address any concerns our colleagues may have. We are currently carrying out a full clean of the facility.

“Last month, Royal Mail changed its standard ways of working to ensure that colleagues stay two metres apart. We also implemented a new rule so that only one person is in a Royal Mail delivery vehicle at any one time.

“We have committed over £35 million to buying equipment such as hand sanitiser, disposable gloves and other additional protective measures to keep our people safe as they keep the UK connected during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Asked whether there had been a ‘walk out’ and if there will be an impact on people receiving their mail, a spokesperson replied: “We are working hard to minimise any disruptions to mail.”
