Confidence rises at Queensgate as shoppers return with store re-openings close to pre-lockdown level

Managers say that 96 per cent of its stores have resumed trading since the Covid-19 lockdown forced non-essential traders to temporarily close.

It is the highest percentage of store openings at the Queensgate in the last six months.

Footfall through the centre is continuing to grow with shoppers spending more money than expected at this point during the health crisis.

Managers say confidence has been buoyed by extensive hygiene and social distancing measures installed through the centre and in all stores.

Just two stores are yet to confirm their opening dates and both are of those - Virgin Holidays and TUI - are from the beleaguered travel industry.

In addition, a new retailer is poised to open in the Westgate Arcade.

Centre director Mark Broadhead said: “There is a lot of positively on the mall and it’s exciting to see shoppers returning to enjoy some retail therapy and support our stores,”

He said that sales across the board were strong and spending by shoppers is higher than anticipated.

He added: “Footfall in the shopping centre has continued to grow since non-essential retail reopened in June and confidence in shoppers has returned under the strict safety guidance.

“The overall outlook for Queensgate suggests that retail is showing significant signs of going back to business.”

Recently, Queensgate has seen Joules, New Look, JLP, Monsoon and Accessorize and Millie’s Cookies return to the mall.

Next month, retailer Rather Gifted will join the independent retailers in Westgate Arcade and offer visitors a mix of unique gifts and homeware.

From home accessories to wall art, gift ideas and furnishings, Rather Gifted is positioned to complement the array of businesses along the historic Arcade.

Mr Broadhead said: “We are also delighted to welcome Rather Gifted to the centre.

“They have some beautiful gifts to offer plus an energy and enthusiasm for success, which we hope will inspire others. I wish them all the best in their venture with us.”

Ahead of the ending of the lockdown closure in July, Queensgate staff spent weeks installing hundreds of social distancing signs and hand sanitiser units through the mall and set up a comprehensive cleaning schedule in a bid to ensure the wellbeing of customers and staff.

Mr Broadhead said: “Safety at Queensgate Shopping Centre remains an absolute priority.

“Hand sanitiser is provided and we are keen to promote social distancing.

“Queensgate continues to follow the government guidelines and implement any necessary changes to keep visitors and staff safe.”
