City of Peterborough Swimming Club makes a splash with its 90th anniversary celebrations

Keen swimmers and their guests made a splash with the 90th anniversary celebration for the City of Peterborough Swimming Club.

Members of the City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) celebrated 90 years of competitive swimming in the city with an Anniversary Ball at which guests raised £12,159 as well as enjoying a wonderful evening.

More than 130 guests joined the celebration that was held in association with Junction 17 at The Holiday Inn Peterborough.

Guests included the club's swimmers, families, coaches, volunteers and local business supporters who came together for a night of celebration, dancing and generosity.

Funds were raised through ticket sales, a live auction, a raffle and donations, with VIP sponsors helping to make the evening possible.

Local businesses, families and individuals also donated a remarkable range of auction and raffle prizes.

The funds raised will help COPS keep offering a high-quality training and competition programme during a tough year that will see a shortage of swimming pool space across the city.

Leonie and Colin Bacon, directors of Junction 17 group, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the COPS 90th Anniversary Ball raised an incredible £12,159.12.

"It was a truly fantastic evening, celebrating 90 years of a club that means so much to so many families.

We are incredibly proud to have supported such a special occasion and to have helped bring everyone together for a memorable night.

"To raise such a fantastic amount is a wonderful achievement, and we hope these funds will make a real difference to the club and help support the next generation of talented swimmers."

Luke Mudge, co-chair of COPS, said: "It was a brilliant night, and the generosity was overwhelming.

"The last few years have been hard for the club, and with more pools closing for refurbishment before the new pool opens, the next two years will be tough too.

"This money will help us keep giving our swimmers the quality of programme they deserve."

COPS was founded in 1936 at Peterborough Lido and has about 200 members.

Since the closure of the Peterborough Regional Swimming Pool, COPS has had to travel to pools in three neighbouring counties to deliver its programme.

Pool capacity is about to shrink further over the next two years with a new Peterborough swimming pool not due to open until late 2028.
